A family vacation on Lake Como
There are so many families visiting Lake Como from all over the world. Our team of My Home in Como has become accustomed to giving personalized advice to spend a perfect holiday! Here is a list of 10 activities that we recommend to explore the lake and have fun with your family!
1. Playground with a view
Let's start with simple things. What do little ones like to do? Having fun and playing! The territory is full of playgrounds large and small and often located in panoramic spots!
One of the newest playgrounds in Como is located next to the boat ticket office! A perfect location: while children play, parents can enjoy a fantastic view, perhaps waiting to leave for a boat ride on the lake.
Inside the walled city there is a small, almost "secret" playground, which can be reached from two entrances: one in front of the post office in Via Vittorio Emanuele and the other one from the beautiful Piazza San Fedele.
A large and very pretty playground, with a unique view, is located at Sighignola. A perfect destination for a day trip to enjoy the mountains around Lake Como and a truly breathtaking view of Lake Lugano. La Sighignola is less than an hour drive from Como.
2. A dip in the blue
On the beach or at the lido, there are many chances to take a dip and a swim in the lake in summer! Some beaches also offer special pools for children. Discover the beaches and lidos on the Como branch.
3. A boat ride with mom driving!
Why not rent a boat for a day on the lake instead of taking the classic boat tour? Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Dongo, are just some of the places where you can rent a boat to drive independently to discover Lake Como (you do not need a license).
4. The funicular
For children, a ride in a funicular is surely exciting. And once at the top, the view of the Alps and Lake Como is incomparable (recommended at sunset!). To convince your teenage children to ride the funicular, tell them that from up there they'll take perfect photos for their Instagram profile (or their Tik Tok)!
In addition to the funicular from Como to Brunate, there is also a short cable car from Argegno to Pigra. Once again, the view from the top is amazing! And the more sportive ones can take long walks in the nature from Pigra (also by mountain bike!).
5. Picnic with a view
Olivelli Park in Tremezzina, Villa Olmo in Como and the small beach of Torriggia: these are just some of the perfect locations for a picnic by the lake. If you go further north, there is the large lawn by the lake in Gera Lario, here on windy days the lake is filled with colorful kite-surfing! And behind the beach there is a large playground for the little ones, a football field and a beach volleyball court for the grown-ups!
6. The Hawks and the breathtaking view of Vezio
A visit to the Castle of Vezio in Varenna is a must during a stay on Lake Como. The panorama is stunning, but what is certainly unusual is the falconry demonstration that adults and children love. Days and times of the demonstrations may vary depending on the weather, we always advise our guests to visit the site or call. Varenna is one of the favorite destinations for tourists for a day trip from Como.
7. MiniSwiss e Splash & Spa
Why not take advantage of the closeness proximity to Switzerland for a day trip away from home? Children love exploring Swissminiatur, a miniature Switzerland. A ride on the miniature train will be fun for the youngest ones and they will also learn some Geography!
Another fun place to cross the border is Tamaro and Splash & Spa Park, several entertaining options for kids (from 6 years old) as well as teens and adults of all ages! Click here for more details.
8. Little chefs
Qual è la miglior cucina al mondo? Quella Italiana! Buon appetito!
8. Passeggiate panoramiche
What's the best cuisine in the world? Italian! So why choose to spend a morning learning how to make fresh pasta, gnocchi or pizza? There are many chefs in and around Como to learn from while having fun. We have trusted partners who we know well and can recommend! A typical cooking class consists of a couple of hours of practical lessons where you learn a recipe or two. Then we all have lunch with what you have cooked together. Enjoy!
10. Triennial and Aquarium
In case of rain. There are two train lines that connect Como to Milan, so, particularly when it rains, the best way to entertain your children is to hop on a train and head for the regional capital. From the Aquarium of Milan to the Triennale, to the MUBA for the very young, the choice of how to have fun while learning something new is very wide. Happy exploration!
