10 things for your family to do on Lake Como

We have hosted hundreds of international families in our beautiful homes in Como, and we have shared with them many recommendations on what to do to enjoy Lake Como at its best. Here is a list of 10 things to do on Lake Como with your children and teens.
1. Playgrounds
Let’s start simple. What do kids like to do? They like to have fun and play!
Almost every Italian town has a playground or more for kids to enjoy the outdoors. The city of Como itself has a few public playgrounds inside and outside the city walls.
One of the newest public playgrounds in Como is the one by the boat ticket office, while one of the oldest is right next door, in front of the war memorial, with a carousel and mini train rides as well. Both are popular spots: while kids play, their parents can enjoy a beautiful view. One other playground within the city walls is the one in front of the Post Office in Via Vittorio Emanuele: a tiny play area in quite a picturesque space, in the heart of Como. The little playground in Cernobbio is also a very nice one, a few metres from the lake and the boat dock.
In most lakeside towns there are many more playgrounds, one of the nice large ones, all made of wood, is the playground up at the Sighignola. This is a perfect destination for a day trip exploring the mountains around Lake Como. The amazing view from the top is of Lake Lugano. The Sighignola is less than one hour drive from the city of Como.
2. A swim in blue waters
In Spring and Summer there are many water sports and outdoor activities to choose from and, of course, in the hot summer days a dip in blue waters is a must. A beach or a Lido are definitely a good choice and there are plenty to choose from. Check out here our list of favourites lidos on Lake Como and find out which ones have a kids pool.
3. A boat ride
Boat ride or boat tour? Children and teens may get slightly bored on a classic boat tour with the battello that takes you around the Lake to see George Clooney’s villa, from a distance. But they will surely enjoy a boat ride, either on a posh water taxi or on the more convenient self-drive boat.  These options give you the chance to explore the lake shores with more feedom (and you can get very close to Goerge’s mansion if you care to see it!). Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Dongo: these are only a few of the towns where you can hire a boat and drive it yourself (but don’t let your teens drive!).
If you are not on a budget, hire a private taxi boat and get yourself taken wherever you like on Lake Como. The kids will surely enjoy a stop at Villa Pliniana and at the “Orrido” in Bellano”, plus you can go for a meal in one of the many restaurants by the lake and arrive from the water! If you are staying with us at My Home in Como, ask your Guest Manager to book a ride for you.
4. Funicular and cable car
For the little ones, a ride on a funicular or a cable car is always good fun and grown-ups will also enjoy both the ride and the stunning views at the top. To convince your teenagers to join you, tell them they can take Instagram-perfect pictures of the views to show off on their Social Media!
On Lake Como there are two “mountain rides”: the funicular train from Como up to Brunate and the cable car from Argegno up to Pigra. In both cases, the rides are fairly short and the views are definitely worth it!
5. A picnic with a view
Parco Olivelli in Tremezzina, Villa Olmo in Como (on the way to the Villa, stop by at the sea-plane hangar on the way, kids love to see the airplanes take off and land on water) or the hidden beach of Torriggia; here are a few picnic-perfect locations to enjoy the lake, the views and let kids play around outdoors. If you are a keen hiker there are also plenty of beautiful spots up on the mountains around Lake Como that are perfect for picnics immersed in nature!
6. Falconry at the Vezio Tower

A visit to the Castello di Vezio in Varenna is a must during your stay on Lake Como. Once again, the panorama is extraordinary, but what is certainly worth seeing is the Falconry demonstration that appeals to adults and children alike. Days and times of demonstrations can vary according to the weather, to our Guests we always recommend to visit the website or call before going to Varenna for the visit. Varenna itself is a lovely town to visit on a Day trip from Como.

7. Fun across the border

Let’s say it, the Swiss do it well. Yes there is plenty to do on Lake Como, but if you are here for a week or so, why not pop over to our neighboring Switzerland and take the kids to the Swissminiatur , just 20 minutes away from Como by train? A ride on the kids train will be fun for the little ones and they will also learn a bit of Geography too!
Another fun place to go across the border is the Tamaro and Splash & Spa Park, plenty of fun option for kids (from 6 years old) and adults of all ages! Click here for details.
And do not forget to buy some chocolate on the way back to Lake Como!
8. Baby chefs

What is the best cuisine in the world? Italian, what else? So why not have fun with a local cooking class to learn how to make fresh ravioli, gnocchi or pizza? There are plenty of local chefs to learn from. We have a list of trusted partners we recommend! The typical cooking class consists of a couple of hours of active lesson where you and your children learn to master one or two Italian recipes and then you get to enjoy a full meal with the results of your effort! Buon appetito.
9. A hike with a view
For families who love the outdoors and walks there are many options to discover the mountains and the woods around the lake. Among the best signposted and easiest walks there is the famous Lake Como Greenway.
Attention instead on the Larian mountains, not all paths are well marked. To move safely, we recommend guided tours with our experienced WaW friends and guides and with Hiking Como Lake half-mountain guides. Together with them you can choose personalized itineraries for the tastes of the whole family and created around the abilities of everyone!
10. A train trip on a rainy day

In case of rain only! There are two railway lines that connect Como to Milan, therefore, especially in case of rain, the best way to entertain children is to hop on a train and reach the big city, only a short ride away. From the Milan Aquarium to the Triennale, to the MUBA children Museum for the very young, the choice on how to have fun learning something new is very wide. Enjoy the exploration! PS Parents can indulge in some Fashion shopping too!
